Two enormous statues of warriors painted in red and gold guard the entrance of the Wenwu Temple, tall enough to overshadow any visitor approaching along the monumental staircase. Behind them, three levels of curved roofs covered with green and red tiles rise towards the sky, while in front opens the panorama of Sun Moon Lake, whose waters change color with the light of day. This temple complex, located in the village of Shuishe in Nantou County, is one of the most complete examples of Taiwanese temple architecture of the twentieth century.
The Wenwu Temple was originally built in the 1930s, then rebuilt and expanded into its current form after the waters of the lake were raised following the construction of the dam that feeds the Sun Moon Lake hydroelectric power station. The temple's dual dedication — to Confucius, symbol of literature and knowledge, and to Guan Di and Yue Fei, deities of war and courage — is directly reflected in the architecture, which combines civil solemnity and military power in a single scenic ensemble.
The three-level structure: a vertical path into the sacred
The architecture of the Wenwu Temple develops over three overlapping terraces, each with a distinct function and aesthetic. The first level, the lowest, is dominated by two colossal guardians flanking the entrance portal: painted terracotta figures that embody the protection of the sacred place. Their handcrafted realization, with details such as the sculpted armors and threatening expressions, requires several minutes of close observation to be fully appreciated.
Ascending to the second level, one encounters the pavilions dedicated to the main deities, with smoking incense altars and decorations in carved wood painted with red lacquer and gold. The third level, the highest, offers the widest view of the lake and the surrounding hills, and it is here that the architecture reaches its maximum expressiveness: the double-pitched roofs with raised ends — a typical feature of the Min-nan style, originating from southern Fujian — create a wavy profile that visually interacts with the curves of the shores of the underlying lake.
Construction details to observe closely
Those who approach the temple's facades with attention will notice the colored ceramic panels that cover the outer walls: scenes taken from Chinese mythology and the history of the revered deities, created using the technique of jiannianzhan, that is, the mosaic of hand-cut porcelain. Each panel tells a story and requires a slow reading, from right to left according to classical Chinese tradition.
The temple's pillars are wrapped in dragons carved from gray stone, with scales defined one by one by artisans. This technique, common in Taiwanese temples of Hokkien tradition, reaches a particularly high level of craftsmanship here. It is worth bringing a small flashlight or using the light from a smartphone to illuminate the more shadowy details under the internal porticoes, where the colors of the paintings are better preserved than outside.
The relationship with the lakeside landscape
One of the most effective architectural choices of the Wenwu Temple is its orientation: the main axis of the complex points directly towards the lake, so that every door and every corridor frames the surface of the water like a painting. This integration between architecture and natural landscape is not accidental — it responds to the principles of feng shui that guided the design of the site, with the lake to the south bringing prosperity and the hills to the north protecting the temple from unfavorable winds.
At dawn, when the morning mist still envelops the hills around the lake, the visual effect of the temple emerging from the haze is extraordinary. The slanting light illuminates the green tiles and makes the golden details of the decorations shine, while the reflections on the water duplicate the profiles of the roofs. It is the moment when the architecture of Wenwu reveals its true nature as a construction designed to engage with the surrounding natural environment.
Practical Information for the Visit
The Wenwu Temple is open every day and admission is free. It is easily reachable by bus from the city of Puli or directly from Shuishe, the main arrival point for tourists visiting Sun Moon Lake. The bus ride from the main stop in Shuishe takes about ten minutes. The best time to visit is early in the morning, preferably before eight, when tour groups have not yet arrived and the light is more favorable for photography.
Allow at least an hour and a half to visit the complex at a leisurely pace, including time to climb all three levels and observe the decorative details. On weekends and during Taiwanese national holidays, the temple can be very crowded, with religious ceremonies occupying the indoor spaces. In those cases, it is advisable to maintain respectful behavior, avoid photographing worshippers directly during prayers, and not to cross into areas reserved for worship.
