Women of World War II Memorial

The Women of World War II Memorial in London is a monument dedicated to British women who served during World War II. Opened in 2005, the memorial was designed by sculptor John Mills and is 22 feet high, 16 feet long and 6 feet wide.The monument is made of bronze and consists of 17 different service uniforms, including those of the Women's Royal Naval Service (Wrens), the Royal Air Force, Red Cross nurses, the Air Wardens, and the Women's Land Army (the campaign girls).The uniforms are depicted as having been hung at the end of a day's work and symbolize the tremendous effort of women during the war. By 1943, nine out of ten women between the ages of 20 and 30 had been recruited to work in factories, land, or the armed forces.The memorial is located in downtown Whitehall, near the Cenotaph, the UK's main war memorial.
