Alfonso Gatto Stairs - Salerno | Secret World Trip Planner

The idea was carried out by the Alfonso Gatto Foundation in collaboration with the City of Salerno and executed by Roman visual artist Alice Pasquini in October 2014.

The mural follows the ramps with specific scenes in which portraits of young female figures and children dominate, followed from above by the pensive figure of Alfonso Gatto in the act of lighting a cigarette.

The artistic realization involved not only the walls but also the staircase that leads to Piazza principe Amedeo: on the risers of the ramps there are the verses of "Girotondo", "Un consiglio", "Chissà" and "Ogni uomo è stato un bambino", works of the Poet transcribed by the Salerno artist Greenpino.

The stairs, originally known as 'dei Mutilati,' were decorated with a mural by the Alfonso Gatto Foundation in collaboration with the City of Salerno to celebrate and remember his cultural legacy and contributions to the arts.
The mural features portraits of young female figures and children throughout the ramps, with a pensive figure of Alfonso Gatto himself depicted above, shown in the act of lighting a cigarette. The risers of the staircase are inscribed with verses from Gatto's poems including 'Girotondo,' 'Un consiglio,' 'Chissà,' and 'Ogni uomo è stato un bambino.'
The mural was executed by renowned Roman visual artist Alice Pasquini in October 2014, with verses on the staircase risers transcribed by Salerno artist Greenpino. The project was a collaborative effort between the Alfonso Gatto Foundation, the City of Salerno, and these talented artists.
The Alfonso Gatto Stairs lead to Piazza Principe Amedeo in Salerno. The mural decoration extends along the ramps and staircase connecting to this central plaza, making it an accessible public art installation in the heart of the city.
The artwork is unique because it extends beyond wall murals to incorporate the staircase structure itself, with Gatto's own poetry verses integrated into the risers of the ramps.
