About Brolo and the strawberry

Brolo and the strawberry - Conegliano | Secret World Trip Planner

The Brolo, located on the hill behind the former Convent of St. Francis, was the botanical garden of the Franciscan friars. This space, bordered by Calle Madonna della Neve and a section of the ancient walls of Conegliano, was cultivated by the friars as a vegetable garden and vineyard for more than four centuries. Here they produced fruits and vegetables for their livelihood. However, with the advent of Napoleonic laws, the land became private property and the walls were used as a quarry for building materials. In 1986, the last owner of the land, Mrs. Annamaria Carpenè, donated the Brolo to the Municipality of Conegliano. Unfortunately, for many years the site remained abandoned. In 1992, the local section of Italia Nostra proposed to the municipal administration to take over the management of the Brolo. Having obtained permission, since 1994 the same section has been working at its own expense to restore the Brolo, restoring the ancient cultivation and creating a beautiful garden with vines, olive and fruit trees.Italia Nostra members produce a "fragolino wine" from the vines grown in the Brolo, which is vinified and bottled on site. The olives harvested in the small olive grove are taken to a nearby oil mill to produce an excellent oil, and the fruit is used to make tasty jams. The Brolo today represents a green oasis in the heart of the city, a place where nature and tradition come together, offering the possibility of enjoying local products and immersing oneself in a peaceful and evocative atmosphere.

Frequently Asked Questions

The Brolo is a historic botanical garden located on the hill behind the former Convent of St. Francis that was cultivated by Franciscan friars as a vegetable garden and vineyard for over four centuries. After becoming private property following Napoleonic laws, it was donated to the Municipality of Conegliano in 1986 by Mrs. Annamaria Carpenè, and has been restored since 1994 by Italia Nostra members who maintain its traditional cultivation practices.
The Brolo produces three main products: a unique 'fragolino wine' that is vinified and bottled on site from the vines grown there, high-quality olive oil made from olives taken to a nearby mill, and tasty fruit jams created from the orchard's harvest. All products reflect the site's commitment to traditional cultivation methods and local gastronomy.
The Brolo is located on the hill behind the former Convent of St. Francis, bordered by Calle Madonna della Neve and the ancient walls of Conegliano, making it accessible from the city center. Today it functions as a peaceful green oasis featuring restored vines, olive trees, and fruit trees, where visitors can enjoy the natural landscape, learn about local history, and purchase artisanal local products.
The local section of Italia Nostra has managed the Brolo since 1992 and began restoration work at their own expense starting in 1994. These dedicated volunteers continue to maintain the garden, restore ancient cultivation practices, and produce the site's signature wines, oils, and jams while preserving its historical character.
The Brolo is uniquely special because it combines four centuries of Franciscan monastic history with hands-on production of authentic local products like fragolino wine and olive oil made on-site. Unlike typical ornamental gardens, it offers an immersive experience in traditional agriculture and local heritage, creating a living connection between the city's past and present through nature and gastronomy.
