About Cantina Tramin: Gewürztraminer from Its Homeland

The scent of rose and lychee arrives even before entering. At the Cantina Tramin in Termeno on the Wine Road, in South Tyrol, Gewürztraminer is not just a wine to taste: it is the very identity of the place, a grape that carries in its name the country where it was born. Termeno — Tramin in German — is considered the geographical cradle of this aromatic grape variety, and the cooperative winery that bears that name is today its most well-known interpreter.

The structure that welcomes visitors is the result of an architectural intervention by the South Tyrolean studio Werner Tscholl, completed in 2009. The tasting room is literally embedded in the terraces of the vineyard: large panels of perforated steel with floral patterns filter sunlight, creating shadow plays on the internal walls, while the panoramic windows open the view to the rows of vines that rise towards the Dolomites. It is a detail that every visitor can verify in person: sitting at the tasting counter means having the vineyards just a few meters away, almost within reach.

A cooperative with over a hundred years of history

The Cantina Tramin is a cooperative winery founded in 1898, which today brings together about 200 winegrower members. The vineyards extend over more than 260 hectares and are located at varying altitudes, between 250 and 850 meters above sea level. This altitude variation is one of the factors that defines the character of the wines: cool nights preserve acidity and aroma, while warm days promote the ripening of sugars.

The winery produces several lines of wines, but it is the selection dedicated to Gewürztraminer that receives the most consistent international recognition. The Nussbaumer version, produced from grapes coming from a single historic vineyard located in the heart of Termeno, is considered one of the benchmark expressions of this grape variety worldwide. The bottles of this selection feature the name of the vineyard on the label, a practice that reflects the winery's attention to the traceability of the territory.

The terroir of South Tyrol and Gewürztraminer

The soil of Termeno is predominantly calcareous and clayey, with components of red porphyry, a volcanic rock that characterizes part of the South Tyrolean Wine Road. This substrate, combined with the continental climate moderated by the proximity to Lake Caldaro — one of the warmest lakes in the Alps — creates special conditions for the cultivation of aromatic varieties. Gewürztraminer here develops intense aromas of dog rose, exotic fruit, and spices, with a generous alcoholic structure and a slightly bitter finish.

In addition to Gewürztraminer, the winery produces Pinot Grigio, Lagrein, Pinot Noir, and Sauvignon Blanc, many of which are vinified in basic versions and in vineyard selections. Lagrein, an indigenous South Tyrolean grape variety, offers an interesting contrast with the aromatic whites: dark ruby color, firm tannins, and notes of blackberries and dark chocolate. Tasting both during the visit allows one to understand the ampelographic diversity of this small region.

The tasting room and the visit experience

The shop and the tasting room are open to the public and do not require a reservation for a simple stop at the wine shop. For structured guided tastings, however, it is advisable to book in advance, especially in the months of September and October, when the winery is more crowded due to the harvest. The prices for guided tastings generally range between 15 and 30 euros per person, depending on the number of wines included and the chosen format.

A practical tip: arriving in the morning, between 9:30 and 11:30, allows you to visit the space with less crowding and enjoy the natural light coming in through the windows in the best way. The winery is just a few minutes' walk from the center of Termeno, easily reachable by train from the Ora station or by car via the SS42 Wine Road. Parking is available nearby. A complete visit, including a guided tasting and free time in the wine shop, typically takes between one and a half to two hours.

What to take home

The internal wine shop offers the entire range of production, including previous vintages of some selections, not always available outside the region. The Gewürztraminer Nussbaumer is the most representative choice to take with you, but it is worth asking the staff — generally bilingual in Italian and German — which vintages are available in magnum or special formats. Aromatic white wines also age well for several years, contrary to common belief, and some vintages of the Nussbaumer show remarkable complexity after five or six years from the harvest.
