Castro Caves - Grotte di Castro | Secret World Trip Planner

Grotte di Castro is a pretty village of Alta Tuscia Viterbese, lying on a hill, 467 meters above sea level, surrounded by woods a few kilometers from Lake Bolsena. Grotte di Castro was a big Etruscan centre of primary importance, between the territory of Vulci and Volsinii (Bolsena); already in the VIII century B.C. it was very active and had a remarkable development also during the following century, as it is testified by the consistent surrounding necropolis and the numerous chamber tombs. Like all the Etruscan places, also the ancient settlement of the "Civita" suffered the repercussions of the Roman expansionism. Then, during the Longobard devastation, the surviving population had to move to the nearby and safer cliff that hosts the present town of Grotte di Castro. In a first moment the inhabitants had to use as their homes the caves, in part already existing and from here the name of the village. Decidedly fascinating is the church of San Giovanni Evangelista, which with its modern forms offers a perfect contrast with the nearby ruins of an ancient sacred building destroyed in the first half of 1100. While, just outside the built-up area, it is still possible to admire some very old necropolis.

Frequently Asked Questions

The village gets its name from the caves that early inhabitants used as homes after relocating to the cliff during the Longobard invasions in the early medieval period. Some of these caves were pre-existing, and the surviving population from the ancient "Civita" settlement adapted them for residential use, creating the foundation of the present-day town.
Grotte di Castro was a major Etruscan center between the territories of Vulci and Volsinii, flourishing from the 8th century B.C. onwards. Visitors can explore ancient chamber tombs and well-preserved necropolises located just outside the built-up area, which testify to the settlement's remarkable development during Etruscan times.
The Church of San Giovanni Evangelista is the village's most notable religious structure, featuring striking modern architectural forms that create an interesting contrast with nearby ruins of an ancient sacred building destroyed in the first half of the 1100s. This juxtaposition of old and new makes it a fascinating site for architecture and history enthusiasts.
Grotte di Castro is a hilltop village in Alta Tuscia Viterbese, situated 467 meters above sea level and surrounded by woods, located just a few kilometers from the shores of Lake Bolsena. Its proximity to the lake and natural landscape makes it an ideal base for exploring the Viterbese region.
The village is strategically positioned on a cliff surrounded by dense woods at a significant elevation, which historically made it a safer refuge when the population relocated from the lower Etruscan settlement during medieval invasions. This elevated, forested setting offers visitors a charming atmosphere and natural beauty complementing its rich archaeological heritage.
