About Château Léoville Barton

Château Léoville Barton - Saint-Julien-Beychevelle | Secret World Trip Planner

"Château Léoville Barton is a 2ème Grand Cru Classé which is located in Saint-Julien, near the estuary of Gironde. We are in France, more precisely in the Médoc region, one of the most renowned regions of the whole country for the production of great red wines, renowned worldwide for their charm. The Château has an ancient history, which dates back to 1754, when it was built by Monsieur de Pontet. After the French revolution, Hugh Barton, Irish by birth and moved to France in order to commercialize Bordeaux wines, succeeded in realizing the dream of a lifetime, - the one of becoming a vigneron - by purchasing from Pierre-Bernard de Pontet first the Château Langoa Barton, and then, after some years, he succeeded in expanding thanks to the purchase of Léoville Barton's vineyards as well. A fundamental date in the history of the winery is 1855, the year in which it was classified as 2ème Grand Cru. Today the estate spreads for a total of 50 hectares (148 acres), cultivated on soils made of gravelly deposits, resting on a clay substratum. Besides perfect vineyards, inside the Château it is possible to observe a garden-park with incredible profiles, result of the work of many generations, where more than one thousand varieties of roses follow one another in an unforgettable landscape. In the vineyards are kept some historical plots with very old plants, which contribute to give aromatic depth to the bouquet of wines. As for the distribution of vines, 74% is dedicated to Cabernet Sauvignon, 34% to Merlot and 9% to Cabernet Franc. These are the three grapes which contribute to create the final blend of the two labels which every year come to life inside the Château. Alongside the Grand Cru Classé, which is difficult to describe in words alone, as evidenced by the great scores reserved for it in the different vintages, we also find "La Rèserve de Léoville Barton", another true excellence of the Saint-Julien terroir. Frequently Asked Questions

Château Léoville Barton was originally built in 1754 by Monsieur de Pontet and gained its 2ème Grand Cru Classé classification in the prestigious 1855 classification. The estate's modern history began when Irish entrepreneur Hugh Barton purchased the vineyard after the French Revolution, fulfilling his dream of becoming a vigneron and eventually expanding the property to its current 50 hectares.
Château Léoville Barton is situated in Saint-Julien, near the Gironde estuary in the Médoc region of Bordeaux, France—one of the world's most renowned wine-producing areas. The estate is easily accessible from Bordeaux city, which is the nearest major transportation hub with excellent train and car connections to the Médoc wine region.
The château's wines are blended from three primary grape varieties: 74% Cabernet Sauvignon, 34% Merlot, and 9% Cabernet Franc, which together create the distinctive bouquet and character of their Grand Cru Classé wines. These grapes are cultivated on gravelly soils with clay substratum, and some historical vineyard plots with very old vines contribute additional aromatic depth to the final blend.
Beyond the 50 hectares of vineyards, visitors can explore an extraordinary garden-park featuring more than one thousand varieties of roses arranged in stunning landscape designs created over many generations. This botanical attraction, combined with the château itself and its wine cellar, makes for a comprehensive and memorable estate experience.
The estate produces two main labels: the 2ème Grand Cru Classé wine, which consistently receives excellent scores across different vintages, and 'La Réserve de Léoville Barton,' another highly regarded expression of Saint-Julien terroir. Both wines benefit from the château's exceptional soil composition and historical vineyard plots that enhance the complexity and quality of the final product.
