Honey-colored sandstone that warms in the sun of Madhya Pradesh, and on it, thousands of human figures intertwined in postures that defy gravity and modesty. The temples of Khajuraho do not announce themselves discreetly: they strike you with the force of an art that has never sought compromise. Built between 950 and 1050 AD, during the reign of the Chandela dynasty, these temple complexes represent one of the absolute peaks of medieval Indian architecture.
The site, recognized as UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1986, originally includes about 85 temples, of which 25 still survive in sufficiently intact conditions to be visited today. Distributed in three groups — western, eastern, and southern — they cover an area that requires at least a whole day to be explored with due attention. The western group, the most famous and best preserved, is the one that concentrates the absolute masterpieces.
The Nagara architecture and the sculptures that tell the story of life
The architectural style of the temples of Khajuraho belongs to the Nagara tradition of northern India, characterized by shikhara towers that rise vertically with curvilinear profiles. The Kandariya Mahadeva temple, dedicated to Shiva, is the most imposing of the group: it reaches a height of about 30 meters and features over 800 sculptures on its outer walls, arranged in horizontal bands that wrap around the entire structure. Looking at it from below, the effect is that of a sacred mountain populated by human and divine beings.
The erotic sculptures — the so-called mithuna — actually occupy only a portion of the total decorations: it is estimated to be around 10-15% of the entire sculpted surface. The rest depicts deities, warriors, musicians, elephants, and scenes of everyday life. This proportion is important to remember: those who arrive expecting only sensual images will find themselves in front of a narrative universe that is much more complex, where eros is one element among many, not the exclusive subject.
The meaning of the sculptures: interpretations and mysteries
Scholars have not yet reached a definitive consensus on the meaning of the erotic scenes. Some theories link them to tantric philosophy, while others interpret them as representations of kama — earthly desires — to be overcome before entering the inner sanctuary. A widespread reading suggests that the sculptures serve as magical protection against lightning, an idea rooted in ancient Indian beliefs. Whatever the correct interpretation may be, walking along the outer walls of the Kandariya Mahadeva or the Lakshmana temple — dedicated to Vishnu and built around 930-950 AD — means reading a theology carved in stone with extraordinary technical precision.
It is worth bringing a small flashlight or using the camera zoom to observe the details in the higher panels: jewelry, hairstyles, facial expressions. The Chandela artisans worked with a care that today seems almost incredible, considering that many of these figures are only a few centimeters tall and are located several meters off the ground.
The Eastern Group and the Jain Temples
A few kilometers from the Western Group, the Eastern Group includes both Hindu temples and a core of Jain temples that are particularly well preserved. The Parsvanatha Temple, the largest of the Jain group, impresses with the quality of the sculptures on its outer walls, comparable to those of the nearby Hindu temples. It is a reminder that the art of Khajuraho did not belong to a single religious tradition, but was an expression of a shared artistic culture among different communities.
The Eastern Group is less frequented by tourists compared to the Western Group, which paradoxically makes it more enjoyable: less crowd, more silence, the possibility to sit on a step and observe without haste. The village of Khajuraho extends all around, and walking between the two groups means crossing ordinary streets, markets, and local daily life.
Practical tips for the visit
The best time to visit the western group is in the early morning, between 7:00 and 9:00, when the slanting light enhances the reliefs of the sculptures and the temperature is still bearable. The ideal months are from October to March: the Indian summer brings temperatures that exceed 40°C and makes the visit very tiring. The entrance ticket to the western group for foreign visitors is about 600 rupees (update at the time of the visit, ASI rates change periodically).
To reach Khajuraho, you can fly from Delhi or Varanasi to the local airport, or arrive by train to Jhansi or Satna and continue by bus or taxi. Allow at least two full days to visit all three groups without rushing. A certified local guide can make a difference: many iconographic details are invisible without a key to understanding.
