Top of the World
Lake Turano, in the province of Rieti, on the western edge of the nature reserve Monte Navegna and Monte Cervia, is artificial. It rises at an altitude of 536 metres along the course of the Turano river and has a perimeter of about 36 kilometres. Built in 1939 to produce hydroelectric power for the territory of Rieti, on its shores are castles, ancient villages and the towns of Ascrea and Paganico Sabino. The lake is a beautiful oasis of biodiversity and a starting point for excursions to discover the cultural and historical heritage around the town of Castel di Tora, considered one of the most beautiful villages in Italy; not far away is Colle di Tora, a very small village of pre-Roman origin overlooking the crystal clear water of the lake, whose fortunate position has made it a perfect film set.
