An ancient legend, passed down from grandparents, says that the town's Franciscan friars, several centuries ago, were great producers of red wine.

Legend of Sangiovese - Santarcangelo di Romagna | Secret World Trip Planner

One day, inside the convent they hosted an important person, a bishop. During the banquet, they served him a goblet of wine. The guest, amazed by the excellence of the drink, asked the name of it. One of the monks, inspired by the name of the hill on which the monastery is built and the intense color of the wine (as red as blood), immediately replied, "Blood of Jupiter." Only over time did the name change to "Sangiovese." We can say that it is an honest wine, a true wine, like the people of Romagna. A deep ruby color, a pleasant texture, a very intense aroma (cherry, red fruit, violets, spices) and a strong flavor that keeps the tannins in harmony with everything else.

Frequently Asked Questions

The name Sangiovese originated in Santarcangelo, Romagna, according to an ancient legend. Franciscan friars centuries ago served an impressive red wine to a visiting bishop, who asked its name—a monk inspired by the monastery's hilltop location and the wine's blood-red color immediately replied 'Blood of Jupiter,' which eventually evolved into 'Sangiovese.'
Sangiovese is the primary grape variety used in Chianti, but Chianti is a blend that combines Sangiovese with other red grape varieties. While Sangiovese wine showcases the pure characteristics of this single grape from Romagna, Chianti offers a more complex blend with a broader geographical reputation.
Sangiovese is characterized by a deep ruby color, pleasant texture, and very intense aromas of cherry, red fruit, violets, and spices, with a strong flavor that keeps tannins in perfect harmony. The wine reflects the honest and authentic character of the Romagna people, making it a true expression of the region's winemaking tradition.
Although Sangiovese is the symbol of Romagna and has been produced for centuries, it has remained less famous than comparable Italian wines like Chianti, though this has been changing in recent years. The wine is becoming increasingly appreciated internationally as travelers and wine enthusiasts discover its quality and the rich history behind it.
Sangiovese is intrinsically linked to Santarcangelo, where Franciscan friars were renowned wine producers several centuries ago and created the legendary wine that would eventually bear this name. Visiting the town allows you to experience the birthplace of this historic wine and understand the cultural heritage that shaped one of Romagna's most authentic products.
