Miraculous church of Madonna del Pozzo - Spoleto | Secret World Trip Planner

Entering the city through the gate, go up along Via Monterone (ancient Via Flamina). Immediately on the left, there is the small chapel of the Madonna del Pozzo, embedded in a building. Inside there is an altar and a well, now closed, from which sulphurous water flowed, considered miraculous for the healing of people suffering from mange or scabies, the reason why the chapel was erected there.Outside it is very sober, with four pilasters supporting a tympanum. The interior has frescoes by an unknown author depicting St. Paul and St. Peter on the left, while in the center is the Madonna with Jesus blessing, placed between Saints John the Baptist and St. Peter the Martyr, patron saint of Spoleto. On the right are represented St. Francis and St. Anthony of Padua. Today the tiny town church, restored in 1963 by the Friends of Spoleto, houses the smallest museum in Umbria, conceived and managed by Franco Troiani since 1997. Studio A'87's Opus & Light brings contemporary works of art by various authors on a monthly or bi-monthly basis to this special showcase. A small town gem that should not be forgotten.
