Top of the World
The Museum of the Risorgimento of Solferino and San Martino is dedicated to the Risorgimento, with particular attention to the finds related to the battle of Solferino and San Martino (24th June 1859), an armed conflict of the Second War of Independence that took place in several phases and in different locations. The museum has a branch office in the nearby town of San Martino della Battaglia, a hamlet of Desenzano del Garda, in the province of Brescia.
The finds preserved in the museum in Solferino cover chronologically the entire Risorgimento and can be dated from 1796, the year of Napoleon Bonaparte's first descent in Italy, to 1870, the year of the taking of Rome. The exhibition route is guided by captions explaining the events. Findings from the battle are also exhibited in the Rocca di Solferino.
Exhibitions include original documents from the period, prints and drawings, an extensive iconographic collection, military uniforms, weapons, cannons and other memorabilia. The collection is then completed by relics related to the battle, with particular attention to relics that refer to the phase of the armed conflict fought at Solferino.
