Puerto Plata è a city located on the north coast of the Dominican Republic and è one of the country's top tourist destinations. Founded in 1502 by Christopher Columbus, the city has a rich Spanish colonial history, which is reflected in its historic buildings and plazas. One of the cityà s main historical sites is Fort San Felipe, built in the 16th century to defend the city from pirates. Today the fort houses a museum with exhibits on the history of the cityà and the region. Another popular attraction in Puerto Plata è the cable car that goes up Isabela de Torres Hill, where there is a large statue of Christ the Redeemer and a beautiful botanical garden. The panoramic view from the top è is breathtaking and the garden offers a wide varietyà of tropical plants. The town also has some beautiful beaches, including Playa Dorada, Sosua Beach and Cabarete Beach. The Cabarete è area in particular is a popular destination for water sports, such as surfing and kite surfing, due to its strong waves and constant wind. Puerto Plata è is also known for rum, and there are several distilleries that offer tours and tastings. Other popular activities include visiting coffee farms, rafting along the region's rivers, and visiting tobacco plants.
