Top of the World
The structure è has been restored to its original architecture, bringing out the Renaissance entablatures and pillars hidden by 19th-century stucco. San Severo was built in 1575 on the ancient church with hospital of Santa Maria a Selice, which was modified and renovated between 1599 and 1620 to a design by Gian Giacomo Conforto.
The interior has the typical architectural features of the 16th century, in which the 18th-century polychrome marble altars are inserted. Noteworthy è the sepulchral monument of Giovanni Alfonso Bisvallo, sculpted by Gerolamo D'Auria in 1617, dismembered by the 1688 earthquake and reassembled in the 18th-century restoration in the altar of the right transept.
The usability of the city-owned church is ensured by the Artistic and Museum Heritage Service of the 9th Central Directorate for Cultural Policies of the City of Naples with municipal staff and socially useful workers. The valuable nave of the structure hosts concerts, temporary exhibitions and cultural events consonant with the monumentalityà of the place.
