About The Church of San Francesco and its Crucifix

The Church of San Francesco and its Crucifix - Grosseto | Secret World Trip Planner

In Piazza San Francesco there is the homonymous church of fourteenth-century plant, inside we point out the famous Crucifix on wood (1285 approx.) attributed to Duccio di Boninsegna, although after recent studies on the work there is uncertainty whether to attribute the authorship to Duccio di Boninsegna or to the Sienese Master of Badia a Isola. However, whoever the author may be, the work is of enormous artistic importance as the author breaks away from the conventionality of Tuscan artists of the period and is undoubtedly one of the most important in the whole of Tuscany. Note the transparent and fluttering loincloth that recalls that of Cimabue in the Basilica of Assisi. Going back to the church, in the right chapel you can admire the frescoes painted by Antonio and Francesco Nasini. On the left side, instead, there was the Franciscan convent of which today remains a well-kept cloister with the sixteenth-century Pozzo della Bufala.

Frequently Asked Questions

The wooden Crucifix, dating to approximately 1285, is traditionally attributed to Duccio di Boninsegna, though recent scholarly studies suggest it may have been created by the Sienese Master of Badia a Isola. Regardless of the exact artist, it remains one of the most important artistic works in all of Tuscany, notable for its innovative departure from the conventional style of the period.
The Crucifix stands out for breaking away from the conventionality of Tuscan artists of its time, featuring a distinctly transparent and fluttering loincloth that recalls the style of Cimabue's famous works in the Basilica of Assisi. This artistic innovation makes it one of the most important crucifixes in Tuscany and a must-see for art enthusiasts.
In the right chapel of the church, you can admire beautiful frescoes painted by the brothers Antonio and Francesco Nasini, adding to the artistic treasures within this fourteenth-century church. These works complement the famous Crucifix and provide insight into different artistic periods represented in the building.
Beyond the church itself, the left side of the complex features a well-preserved Franciscan convent cloister with the sixteenth-century Pozzo della Bufala (Buffalo Well), offering visitors a glimpse into monastic life and Renaissance architecture. The entire complex in Piazza San Francesco provides a comprehensive experience of religious and artistic history.
The Church of San Francesco was built in the fourteenth century, while the wooden Crucifix inside dates to approximately 1285, making it roughly a century older than the church structure itself. This chronological difference reflects how important artworks were often preserved and incorporated into newer buildings throughout medieval Tuscany.
