About Anacapri and the ancient Villa Romana

Anacapri and the ancient Villa Romana - Anacapri | Secret World Trip Planner

On the promontory jutting out from Mount Solaro, on the Anacapri plateau, stands a Roman villa, still fairly well preserved, characterized by a belvedere area, a residential area with a tricliniar hall, at the west end, and another private sector. The terrace of the belvedere develops along the edge of the esplanade, from one end to the other of the promontory, and consists of a long loggia with ambulatory arches and pillars, which runs from east to west, followed by a second raised and curvilinear section. In the first stretch, the outer loggia, originally covered by a small columned portico, corresponded to a second ambulatory inside, equipped with rest seats. At the end of the loggia there is a luxurious residential quarter. Obliterated under the medieval tower is an alcove, preceded by a vestibule and a belvedere terrace; while, to the west, under the loggia are two large living rooms. A torso of a naked male statue was found in a cubiculum (bedroom) in this part of the villa, while some remnants of mosaic floor and ducts for the canalization are preserved on the vast plateau that extends behind the loggia and the belvedere district.

Frequently Asked Questions

The villa features a belvedere terrace with a long loggia running east to west, complete with ambulatory arches and pillars, a luxurious residential quarter at the west end with a tricliniar hall, and a private sector. The belvedere terrace includes rest seats and originally had a columned portico, while the residential area contains large living rooms and cubicula (bedrooms) that have yielded artifacts like a male statue torso.
The villa stands on a promontory jutting out from Mount Solaro on the Anacapri plateau, positioned to offer expansive views across the landscape. The site's elevated location on the plateau makes it a naturally strategic position with commanding vistas from the belvedere terrace.
Visitors can observe remnants of mosaic flooring, the well-preserved loggia structure with its arches and pillars, and the layout of the residential quarters including the tricliniar hall and cubicula. Additionally, canalization ducts are preserved on the vast plateau behind the belvedere district, offering insights into the villa's sophisticated water management system.
A medieval tower was built on the site, which obliterated an original luxurious alcove that was preceded by a vestibule and belvedere terrace. This demonstrates how the Roman villa was repurposed and built over during medieval times, partially obscuring some of its original features.
The villa's design reveals the sophisticated lifestyle of wealthy Romans, with distinct zones for leisure (the elaborate belvedere with resting seats and ambulatory spaces), dining (the tricliniar hall), and private quarters (cubicula). The presence of mosaic floors, statuary, and an advanced water canalization system indicates luxury and refined architectural planning typical of elite Roman residences.
