Bayerisches Nationaltheater is the successor of the first musical theater, built in 1818 on the order of King Maximilian I Józef according to the design of Charles von Fischer. Currently, it is the third largest stage in the world (2,500 sq m) among the largest opera houses in the world - it is only ahead of Opéra Bastille in Paris and the Grand Theater in Warsaw.

Munich theater has burned many times - for the first time during construction. The next fire broke out in 1823 and completely destroyed the interior - it could not be extinguished because the water in the aqueduct froze. The next opening took place in 1925. The building survived until 1943, when it was destroyed by Allied bombs. The current building dates from 1963.
