Convent and Church of St. Francis of Assisi - Messina | Secret World Trip Planner

???????? Founded in 1254 by the Messina noblewomen Violante Palizzi, Eleonora da Procida and Beatrice Belfiore, despite being of considerable size, the church consists of a single rectangular hall, without division into naves, with a basilica plan in the shape of a Latin cross, transept and terminal apses. The roof of the imposing nave, in the spirit of Italian Gothic, is pitched with a structure composed of large exposed wooden trusses, which replace the stone vaults of French Gothic and masterfully emphasize the poor character of Franciscan architecture. It preserves, in addition to the valuable wooden and silver simulacrum of the Immaculate Conception (18th cent.), a tile with the drops of blood of St. Anthony of Padua, who performed the first miracle of his life here in 1221.

Frequently Asked Questions

The church was founded in 1254 by three notable Messina noblewomen: Violante Palizzi, Eleonora da Procida, and Beatrice Belfiore. Despite its considerable size, it was built according to Franciscan principles of simplicity and austerity, reflecting the religious values of its founders.
The church features Italian Gothic architecture with a single rectangular hall designed in a Latin cross basilica plan, complete with transept and terminal apses. Its most distinctive feature is the pitched roof supported by large exposed wooden trusses instead of stone vaults, which emphasizes the humble character of Franciscan architecture.
The church preserves a valuable 18th-century wooden and silver simulacrum of the Immaculate Conception, as well as a tile displaying drops of blood from St. Anthony of Padua. These relics commemorate St. Anthony's first miracle, which took place here in 1221.
St. Anthony of Padua performed his first miracle at this location in 1221, making it a significant pilgrimage site. The church houses a sacred tile with drops of his blood as a testament to this important religious event in the saint's life.
Unlike French Gothic churches with ornate stone vaults, this church uses large exposed wooden trusses to support its roof, deliberately rejecting architectural grandeur in favor of Franciscan simplicity. This design choice masterfully reflects the poor and humble principles of the Franciscan order while maintaining the structural elegance of Italian Gothic style.
