Two black basalt towers rise from the sea like forgotten sentinels, separated from the mainland by waters that change color with every hour of the day. Drangarnir is a double sea arch located along the western coast of the island of Vágar, in the Faroe Islands, accessible on foot from the village of Bøur. It is not a place that announces itself with tourist signs or equipped parking: it is found by walking on wind-swept grassy paths, with sheep grazing indifferently next to dizzying cliffs.
What makes this place truly unique is its proximity to Sørvágsvatn lake, the largest lake in the Faroe Islands with an area of about 3.4 square kilometers. From certain angles of the path, the lake appears to be suspended above the ocean — an optical illusion caused by the difference in elevation between the lake's surface and the underlying cliff. When the sunset light comes in low from the west, this visual overlap between lake, sea, and rock creates a scene that is difficult to describe with ordinary words.

The main arch, which gives the place its name, connects the two rocky structures with a natural bridge worn by the sea. The round trip is about 6-7 kilometers and takes an average of two and a half hours, but the time can extend considerably if you stop to take photos or if weather conditions slow your pace. There are no safety fences along the edges of the cliffs: caution is essential, especially in strong winds.
You need to purchase an access permit before embarking on the hike. In recent years, local authorities have introduced an online booking and payment system to manage the flow of visitors and protect the area. The cost is around 300-400 Faroese crowns per person, equivalent to about 40-55 euros, and often includes the accompaniment of a local guide. The Faroe Islands are famous for unpredictable weather: rain, wind, and sun can alternate within an hour. Fog can suddenly descend and significantly reduce visibility.

Avoid the winter months if the goal is landscape photography: between November and February, there are very few hours of light and weather conditions can make the trail dangerous. Arriving at sunset often means leaving Bøur in the late afternoon, around 6:00-7:00 PM, to have enough time before the light changes.
A place that requires respect
Drangarnir is not a destination suitable for those seeking comfort or tourist infrastructure. There are no bars, public restrooms, or equipped rest areas along the way. What you find is an unspoiled Atlantic landscape, with seabirds — mainly puffins — nesting on the cliffs during the summer season and allowing for close observation.
Respect for the land is an integral part of the experience. The Faroe Islands have deliberately chosen to limit the number of visitors to certain sites in order to preserve their integrity. Walking off the trails, leaving waste, or getting too close to the edges is not only dangerous: it is an act that harms a fragile ecosystem that has taken centuries to form. Arriving here at sunset, with the sun slowly descending towards the Atlantic horizon, is a privilege that is worth earning with care.
