About Narikala: The Medieval Fortress Overlooking Tbilisi

Narikala: The Medieval Fortress Overlooking Tbilisi - MRQ5+6G6 | Secret World Trip Planner

The walls of Narikala emerge from the rock as if they had grown together with the hill on which they rest. This fortress, whose origins date back to the 4th century AD, extends along the ridge overlooking the sulfur bath district of Abanotubani, and from up there one can embrace with a single glance the curve of the Mtkvari River, the dome roofs of the Armenian and Orthodox churches, and the tangled alleys of the old city.

Narikala is not a palace in the classical sense of the term, but its architectural history is that of a living organism that has changed shape with each domination: Persian, Arab, Mongol, Turkish, before becoming an integral part of Georgian identity. What the visitor sees today is a palimpsest of overlapping eras, where the oldest stones coexist with more recent restorations and with the silent presence of the Church of St. Nicholas, rebuilt in the 1990s within the walled enclosure.

The architectural structure: two enclosures and centuries of stratifications

The fortress is divided into two distinct enclosures, separated by an internal moat. The lower part, more accessible and better preserved, houses the church of San Nicola — a light stone building with an east-facing apse, rebuilt after an explosion of a powder magazine in 1827 had devastated the entire complex. The upper part, older and more eroded, retains partially collapsed towers that offer a direct reading of the building materials used over the centuries: fired bricks from the medieval period alternate with blocks of dark lava stone typical of the Caucasian region.

Walking along the parapet walkway, where possible, one can notice the differences in the thickness of the walls in the various sections: some exceed two meters, built to withstand Ottoman artillery. The corner towers feature arrow slits from different eras, some narrow and vertical for archers, others wider for firearms. Every detail tells of a tactical modification, a response to a new threat.

The panorama and the visual relationship with the city

From the summit of Narikala, about 70 meters above the level of the underlying neighborhood, the view of Tbilisi is concrete and measurable. The contrast between the upside-down umbrella-shaped domes of the Georgian Orthodox churches and the squarer profiles of the Soviet constructions extending to the north is clearly visible. The Abanotubani neighborhood, directly at the foot of the fortress, shows its characteristic pink-brick domes that cover the public baths fed by natural sulfur springs — a feature that, according to chronicles, convinced King Vakhtang I Gorgasali to found the city in the 5th century AD.

The Mtkvari River flows visibly to the west, and on clear days, the silhouette of the Kartlis Deda statue — Mother Georgia — can be distinguished on the adjacent hill. The statue, about 20 meters tall, holds a cup of wine for guests in one hand and a sword for enemies in the other: a symbol that the Tbilisians know well and is clearly visible from the fortress.

The Church of San Nicola: Art and Spirituality in the Military Enclosure

Within the walls, the Church of San Nicola deserves specific attention. The reconstruction of the 1990s aimed to respect the original medieval forms, and the interior preserves frescoes created by contemporary Georgian artists in a traditional style, with elongated figures on golden backgrounds typical of Caucasian Orthodox iconography. The dimensions are modest — the nave does not exceed 15 meters in length — but the acoustics are surprising, and liturgical chants are often heard during evening services.

The church is open to visitors, but it is an active place of worship: it is advisable to enter with shoulders and knees covered, and women are encouraged to cover their heads. No ticket is required to access the church, while entry to the fortress itself is free.

How to visit Narikala: practical tips

The most scenic way to reach Narikala is by the cable car that departs from Rike Park, on the left bank of the Mtkvari: the journey takes a few minutes and already offers an aerial perspective of the old city. Alternatively, you can walk up from the Abanotubani neighborhood via a paved path that takes about 20-25 minutes to walk. The best time to visit is late afternoon, when the slanting light enhances the textures of the ancient stones and, at sunset, the roofs of Tbilisi turn orange. Avoid the central hours of a summer day: the hill is exposed and lacks shade, and temperatures can exceed 35 degrees. The complete visit, including the church and the accessible wall walk, takes about an hour and a half.
