Description

Also made by Montorsoli, the fountain depicts Neptune, the God of the sea, with the two monsters Scylla and Charybdis chained to his feet. A legend tells that in the Strait of Messina there were two monsters Scylla and Charybdis which destroyed the boats and ate the sailors and it was the intervention of Neptune that allowed to stop the two monsters and ensure the navigability of the strait. At the top you can see Neptune with his right hand turned towards the Strait of Messina even if initially the fountain was not turned towards the sea, but towards the city.
