Obelisk or Spire of San Gennaro - Napoli | Secret World Trip Planner

The obelisk or spire of San Gennaro is located in Piazza Sisto Riario Sforza. Its construction began in 1336 (a date that makes it the oldest in the city) at the behest of the Deputation of the Treasure of San Gennaro to thank the saint for protecting the city during the eruption of Vesuvius in 1631. It was entrusted to Cosimo Fanzago, who took nine years to complete it, although it still had to wait until 1660 to consider the spire finally completed. The obelisk, which grows upward thanks to a series of decorations and volutes, ends with an Ionic capital, adorned with winged putti, on which stands the bronze statue of the saint, made by sculptor Tommaso Montani.

Construction began in 1336, making it the oldest obelisk in Naples, and was commissioned by the Deputation of the Treasure of San Gennaro as a votive memorial to thank the saint for protecting the city during Vesuvius's devastating 1631 eruption. The obelisk was designed to position St. Gennaro at the threshold of Naples, standing between the city and the dangerous volcano.
The construction was entrusted to architect Cosimo Fanzago, who took nine years to complete the main structure, though the spire wasn't considered fully finished until 1660. This extended timeline reflects the monument's significant size and elaborate decorative details.
The obelisk features a series of decorations and volutes that grow upward, culminating in an Ionic capital adorned with winged putti. At the top stands a bronze statue of Saint Gennaro, crafted by sculptor Tommaso Montani, making it both a spiritual and artistic masterpiece.
