About Seopjikoji: Stunning Lava Sea Sunsets in Jeju

Seopjikoji: Stunning Lava Sea Sunsets in Jeju - Seogwipo-si | Secret World Trip Planner

The wind never stops blowing at Seopjikoji. This tongue of volcanic land juts out into the ocean at the eastern tip of Jeju Island, South Korea, and anyone who arrives here immediately understands why Koreans consider this promontory one of the most photogenic places on the entire peninsula. The landscape is built on brutal contrasts: the porous black of basalt lava, the green of grasses bent by the wind, the metallic blue of the East China Sea merging at the horizon with the sky.

Seopjikoji is located in the Seogwipo-si district, on the southeastern coast of Jeju, and its name in the local dialect literally means eastern promontory. The site has become famous throughout Korea also thanks to the novel and television series All In, partially filmed here in the early 2000s, but its beauty does not depend on any fiction: it is written in the rock, in the salt, and in the light.

A landscape forged by the volcano

Walking along the main path, which can be traversed entirely on foot in about an hour round trip, one crosses expanses of solidified lava that emerge directly from the sea. The edges of the promontory drop steeply into the water with dark rock walls, and at some points, it is possible to observe the columnar basalt formations — hexagonal structures created by the rapid cooling of lava — that characterize the entire coast of Jeju, a UNESCO World Heritage site since 2007.

The white lighthouse that towers at the end of the promontory is one of the most recognizable visual landmarks of the site. It is not a tourist attraction in the strict sense, but its simple silhouette against the open sky becomes an integral part of every photograph taken here. Around it, the wild grasses sway in an almost hypnotic manner, and the sheep that sometimes graze freely in the area add an unexpected note to the volcanic landscape.

The spring of canola flowers

Between March and April, Seopjikoji transforms spectacularly. The fields lining the path fill with canola flowers — yuche in Korean — of an intense and almost unreal yellow. The chromatic contrast between the bright yellow of the flowers, the black of the lava, and the blue of the ocean creates visual compositions that attract professional photographers and enthusiasts from all over the country every year. During this time, the site is very crowded, especially on weekends: arriving at dawn allows you to enjoy the best light and avoid the largest crowds.

In autumn, on the other hand, the fields are covered with white buckwheat flowers — buckwheat is a traditional crop of Jeju — which create a completely different but equally evocative effect. Each season offers a different version of the same place, and many visitors return specifically to see this transformation.

Sunsets and Lights on the Ocean

Despite the geographical description of the promontory indicating it as ideal for sunrise — being oriented towards the east — the late afternoon hours offer an extraordinary quality of light even for those who prefer sunsets. The slanting light of the sun descending towards the west illuminates the lava formations from the side, enhancing their textures and reliefs, and paints the ocean in shades ranging from orange to purple. The sky of Jeju, far from the light pollution of large cities, is often clear and full of colors.

Those who want to experience the true sunrise must calculate the times carefully: in summer the sun rises around 5:30, in winter closer to 7:30. Bringing an extra layer is always advisable — the constant wind significantly lowers the perceived temperature in any season.

How to get there and practical advice

Seopjikoji is located about 30 kilometers from Jeju City International Airport. The most convenient way to reach it is to rent a car or a scooter, a very common practice on the island. Alternatively, there are local buses that connect Seogwipo with the area, but the travel times are considerably longer. Entry to the promontory is free and nearby parking is available, although during peak season — especially during the canola flower bloom — it fills up quickly.

The walking path does not present technical difficulties, but the terrain is uneven and can be slippery in some sections if wet: shoes with non-slip soles are preferable to sandals. There are no dining facilities directly on the promontory, so it is useful to bring water and something to eat if you plan to stay for a long time. The minimum time for a satisfying visit is about an hour and a half, but those who want to take photos calmly or simply sit and listen to the wind and the sea should reserve at least double that time.
