Under the pavement of the historic center of Mexico City lies the great pyramid that the Aztecs called Huei Teocalli, the "Great Temple." It was discovered by chance in 1978, when workers from the Mexican electric company uncovered a huge stone disc depicting the goddess Coyolxauhqui, with a diameter of about 3.25 meters. That fortuitous discovery forever changed the understanding of the Aztec capital Tenochtitlan, and initiated the systematic excavations that today allow visitors to walk alongside the original foundations of the most sacred temple of the Mexica empire.
The Templo Mayor was not a static building: according to Aztec religious tradition, each new ruler built a larger structure over the previous one, like a shell around a shell. Archaeologists have identified at least seven overlapping construction phases, dating from a time span that goes from 1325, the year of the founding of Tenochtitlan, to 1521, when the Spanish conquest brought an end to the empire. What is seen today on the surface is the layering of these epochs: blocks of volcanic stone, carved serpents, ceremonial platforms, and altars emerging from the earth like pages of an open book.
The outdoor ruins: walking among the original stones
The archaeological area covers about 1.2 hectares in the heart of the historic center, just a few steps from the Zócalo, the main square of the city. The elevated walkways allow for close observation of the structures without stepping on the artifacts. The remains of the two twin sanctuaries that crowned the pyramid are clearly recognizable: one dedicated to Tlaloc, the god of rain, and one to Huitzilopochtli, the god of the sun and war. The carved serpent heads flanking the staircases are among the most photographed elements, but it is also worth pausing to consider the sacrificial platforms and the tzompantli, the ceremonial racks for skulls, of which real bone remains were found during recent excavations.
In recent years, excavation campaigns have yielded extraordinary discoveries, including in 2017 the finding of a large stone block with a relief depicting the earth goddess Tlaltecuhtli, and in 2021 the confirmation of even older buried structures. The site is alive in the most literal sense: excavations continue, and it is common to see archaeologists at work during the visit.
The Museum of the Templo Mayor: the collection and masterpieces
Adjacent to the ruins, the museum inaugurated in 1987 houses over 7,000 objects recovered during the excavations, distributed across eight thematic rooms. Entrance to the museum is included in the single ticket for the site, which costs about 85 Mexican pesos for adult foreign visitors (rate subject to updates). The room dedicated to Huitzilopochtli features the Coyolxauhqui disk, the most famous piece in the collection: the goddess is depicted dismembered, in a circular composition of immediate visual power. The stone is displayed in a floor case illuminated from below, and the quality of the sculpture — the details of the jewelry, feathers, bones — is visible even without a magnifying glass.
Among the other noteworthy objects are the masks made of green and turquoise stone, ritual knives with flint blades and inlaid handles, and the funerary urns with still intact votive offerings. One room is entirely dedicated to marine fauna remains — corals, shells, crocodile skeletons — which testify to the empire's trade network, capable of bringing materials from the Pacific Ocean and the Gulf of Mexico to the lake capital. The captions are in Spanish and English, making the visit accessible even without a guide.
How to Organize the Visit Effectively
The site is open from Tuesday to Sunday, from 9:00 AM to around 5:00 PM. The best time to visit is early in the morning, preferably before 10:00 AM, when natural light illuminates the ruins without the intense heat of the central hours and before school groups and organized tours arrive. A complete visit — ruins and museum — takes on average between two and three hours for those who want to read the captions and observe the artifacts carefully.
To reach the site, the nearest subway stop is Zócalo, on Line 2 (the blue line), less than five minutes on foot. It is advisable to avoid the weekends in July and August, when the concentration of tourists makes it difficult to approach the museum displays. Those with a specific interest in pre-Columbian history can request information about guided tours in Spanish at the ticket office, available at fixed times. Bringing water is recommended: the outdoor area does not offer significant shaded areas, and even on cloudy days, the temperature in Mexico City can be high.
