AI Trip Planner Review: Tested in Kyoto 2026 - Kyoto | Secret World Trip Planner

Kyoto has 1,600 Buddhist temples and 400 Shinto shrines. When I opened Google Maps to plan five days in the city, I immediately realized that I needed help. Not the usual help from travel blogs with generic lists, but someone — or something — capable of reasoning about priorities, distances, and schedules intelligently. So I decided to test three AI trip planners in the field, with Kyoto as the real testing ground.

I used Secret World AI Trip Planner, ChatGPT with travel plugins, and a second specialized tool called Wanderlog AI. I put them to the test with the same requests, the same budget constraints, and the same available days. The results surprised me, and not in the same way for all three. Here’s what I discovered.

How I tested Secret World in Kyoto: the concrete request

I opened Secret World and wrote exactly this: “I am in Kyoto for 5 days in March 2026, medium budget, I want to see the main temples but avoid the morning crowds at Fushimi Inari. I prefer to walk and use public transport. I have a particular interest in Zen culture and gardens”. No additional input, no suggestions. I wanted to see what it would produce on its own.

The response arrived in about 40 seconds. Secret World built a day-by-day itinerary that started from Ryoanji at 8:00 in the morning (when it is still almost deserted), passed by Kinkakuji by 9:30 before the arrival of tourist buses, and placed Fushimi Inari on day 3, in the late afternoon after 4:30 PM. It explained why: organized groups leave the shrine by 4:00 PM. This kind of contextual reasoning struck me immediately.

The itinerary in detail: real data, not vague promises

For the first day, Secret World suggested the neighborhood of Arashiyama with a visit to the Tenryuji (entrance to the garden: about 500 yen, an additional 300 yen for the temple), then the bamboo forest and the Jojakukoji, a lesser-known zen temple just a 10-minute walk away, almost always quiet. They provided realistic travel times: 20 minutes by bus from Kyoto station, 4-5 hours total for the area. No traditional trip planner had ever given me this level of detail.

For the day dedicated to the Philosopher's Path, they recommended starting at Ginkakuji around 9:00 and walking south to Nanzenji, about 2 km in 40 minutes of strolling. They added a note I didn't expect: in March, the cherry blossoms along the canal typically bloom between March 25 and April 5, so with a flexible travel date, I could optimize for this as well. Small detail, big difference.

The honest comparison with the other two tools

ChatGPT with travel plugins produced a competent but generic itinerary. Nothing wrong, but the timing indications were vague (“visit Fushimi Inari early in the morning”) and completely lacked the logic of optimizing movements. I had to ask three follow-up questions to get information on prices and travel times. Wanderlog AI was more visual, with an integrated map, but the itinerary seemed built to optimize the most famous attractions, not my specific preferences for zen and gardens. The interest filter worked superficially.

Secret World stood out for one precise reason: it consistently took context into account for all five days. Not just in the first suggestion, but throughout the entire trip. When I requested a change on day 4 to include a visit to Daitokuji (zen complex with 22 sub-temples, entrance varying between 400 and 700 yen per sub-temple), it automatically recalibrated the rest of the day without losing geographical logic. The other two tools responded to the change in isolation, without readjusting the context.

Why Secret World deserves a 9 out of 10 (and what it lacks for a 10)

The final score is 9/10. The reasons are concrete: real contextual reasoning, integrated practical data (timing, indicative prices, travel times), dynamic adaptability, and an authentic understanding of non-standardized travel preferences. In Kyoto, where the difference between a mediocre experience and an extraordinary one is measured in 30 minutes of advance or in an unknown temple 500 meters from the famous one, this type of intelligence makes a difference.

The missing point to reach a 10? The current version still does not integrate direct bookings for ryokan or restaurants, and some pricing information needs to be verified on the official attractions' website. But as a pure planning tool, it is the best I have tested.
