The sound almost disappears immediately. Just a few steps beyond the edge of the Aokigahara forest reveal that the thick moss covering every root, every stone, every meter of lava ground absorbs noises like a sponge. There are no birds, no footsteps, no wind. This physical, measurable silence is the first thing that strikes those who walk the paths of this forest of about 3,500 hectares that stretches at the foot of Mount Fuji, in Yamanashi Prefecture.
Aokigahara literally grows on a lava field formed after the eruption of Fuji in 864 AD, known as the Jogan eruption. The solidified lava has created an irregular and porous substrate on which the forest has built over the centuries a tangle of aerial roots, hidden depressions, and lava caves. Walking here means moving on ground that is never flat, always undulating underfoot, often covered by layers of bright green moss that make it difficult to distinguish where the rock ends and where the void begins.
The Saiko Lake Trail and the Primeval Forest
One of the most accessible paths starts near Saiko Lake, one of the five Fuji lakes, and ventures into the forest following a route marked with colored ribbons tied to the trees. This marking system is essential: the vegetation is so dense and uniform that visual orientation quickly becomes impossible. The dominant trees are mainly Japanese cypress (hinoki) and beech, with trunks twisted and contorted by growing on ground that does not offer flat terrain. The roots rise from the ground like arches, some high enough to pass underneath.
Along this trail, about twenty minutes from the entrance, there are openings to some lava caves, which can be visited with a flashlight. The most famous is the Fugaku Cave (Fugaku Fuketsu), which extends for about 201 meters and is open to the public with an entrance fee, generally around 350 yen. The internal temperature remains constant at around 3°C all year round, which means that the ice that forms in winter persists even in the height of summer, still visible in July.
What one encounters while walking among the roots
The forest floor is the true protagonist. Moss covers every available surface — rocks, fallen trunks, roots — with a precision that seems artificial. In some areas, entire stretches of ground appear like a uniform green carpet, beneath which the irregularities of the lava hide. Those who walk must pay attention to every step: what seems like solid ground may give way to a cavity. This makes the walk slow, careful, almost meditative by necessity.
Light filters through the canopies in an irregular manner, creating areas of almost total shadow even at noon. In some areas, the vegetation is so thick that lateral visibility is reduced to a few meters. It is this combination — silence, low light, unstable ground, absence of visual reference points — that makes the experience of Aokigahara physically different from any other forest. It is not a matter of atmosphere: it is a matter of acoustics, geology, of real and measurable plant density.
How to get there and practical advice
Aokigahara can be reached from the Kawaguchiko station, which is served by buses from the Fujisan station (formerly Kawaguchiko) on the Fujikyuko line. From the station, local buses connect the access areas to the forest and the Fuji lakes. The bus journey takes about 20-30 minutes. Those traveling by car can park in the equipped areas near Lake Saiko or Lake Shoji.
The best time to visit is between May and October, when the trails are not icy and the vegetation is at its full green density. Avoid days of heavy rain: the lava ground covered in moss becomes dangerously slippery. It is strongly advised never to leave the marked trails: stories of people who have gotten lost in the forest are documented and real, not folkloric. Bringing a physical compass is useful because the iron deposits in the lava interfere with GPS signals and can make smartphone navigation apps unreliable. Allow at least two or three hours for a complete route that includes a visit to one of the lava caves.
The silence as a physical characteristic
It is worth returning to this point because it can be verified on site: the silence of Aokigahara is not metaphorical. The moss, the density of the trees, and the porous lava ground create an environment where ambient decibels drop measurably compared to any normal forest. Some visitors describe a feeling of pressure in their ears, similar to what one experiences in highly acoustically isolated environments. Walking here is a specific sensory experience, linked to precise geological and biological conditions that have formed over more than a thousand years on a medieval lava field.
