Frequently Asked Questions

The church houses several notable works including an 18th-century Ancona of St. Hyacinthus by an unknown southern painter, an oil painting of the Trinity with St. Vincent Ferreri painted by Antonio Sarnelli between 1734-1793, and a stunning polychromed and gilded wooden organ chancel from 1693 featuring 12 ribbed panels with relief images of Dominican saints. These pieces represent important examples of southern Italian religious art and craftsmanship.
The Church of St. Mary of Loreto takes its name from a pre-existing chapel that originally stood on the site. According to local tradition, it was built to the same size as the ruined Church of St. Dominic located near the Castle, maintaining a connection to the Dominican heritage of the convent complex.
Several important 16th-century architectural elements survive from the original chapel, including the distinctive portals and main door, a rose window, and a bas-relief featuring the Del Balzo family crest depicted on a spoked wheel. These elements represent valuable remnants of Renaissance design and local noble heritage.
In the 18th century, the church was significantly enlarged through the construction of a side wing that now serves as the sacristy. This expansion allowed the church to accommodate more faithful while preserving the original Renaissance features of the structure.
Unfortunately, only a few rooms that were used as living quarters remain of the original convent complex. The Church of St. Mary of Loreto is the primary surviving structure, though the convent's residential areas have largely disappeared, making the church the most significant remaining element of this religious site.
