Viggianello - Viggianello | Secret World Trip Planner

The origins of the town seem to date back to the 3rd century B.C. during the period of the Second Punic War. In 1494 it became the possession of the Sanseverino family of Bisignano, who built the castle of the same name there. The town is divided into several hamlets, of which the largest is Pedali.

Very beautiful are the 17th-century Palazzo Mastropaolo with a carved wooden doorway and the 17th-century Palazzo Caporale, which belonged to a surgeon, and has now become a private museum with period furnishings, objects, ancient weapons, books and frescoes of the Neapolitan school.

Of artistic interest are the Church of the Assumption, built in the 16th century; the Mother Church dedicated to St. Catherine of Siena, in Gothic style; the Church of the Holy Trinity with Basilian dome; and the Convent of St. Anthony of Byzantine origin in Pantana. The town, part of the Pollino National Park, is surrounded by an area rich in vegetation where, in addition to guided hikes, it is possible to organize interesting walks in the woods.
