At a 1,611 meters above sea level, the Vršič Pass is the highest mountain pass in Slovenia, and you can already tell as you travel along the road that climbs from Kranjska Gora: every bend — and there are exactly 50 hairpin turns, numbered with wooden signs — reveals a different view of the peaks of the Julian Alps. This is not just any road: it was built between 1915 and 1916 by Russian prisoners of war during World War I, forced to work under extreme conditions to ensure supplies for the Austro-Hungarian army on the Isonzo front.
As a testament to that history, at the 8th hairpin turn stands the Russian Chapel, a small wooden church erected in 1916 in memory of the Russian soldiers who died in an avalanche during the construction. It is one of the most touching details of the route: a simple structure, with the typical golden onion dome of Orthodox architecture, nestled in the spruce forest. Stopping here, before continuing the ascent, helps to understand the human cost of this extraordinary road.
The morning light on the peaks
Those who arrive at the pass in the early hours of the morning, preferably before eight, find a slanting light that transforms the rocky walls of Jalovec (2,645 m) and Prisank (2,547 m) into surfaces of ochre and burnt orange. The long shadows outline the contours of the ridges with an almost graphic precision, and the valley of Kranjska Gora below still appears shrouded in a light mist that dulls the greens of the valley floor.
At this time of day, traffic is almost non-existent, and the silence is broken only by the wind and the occasional alpine chough. The colors change rapidly: within an hour, the light becomes whiter and flatter, and the landscape loses that dramatic three-dimensionality that makes it so photogenic. It is worth waking up early.
The sunset and the colors of the evening
The late afternoon and sunset offer a completely different palette. As the sun descends towards the west, the northern walls of the mountains fall into shadow and take on shades of cool gray-blue, while the peaks still illuminated turn a dusty pink and then violet. The sky above the pass, at that altitude, is often a deep blue that sharply contrasts with the light limestone rock of the Julian Alps.
From the summit square of the pass, the distinction between the northern side, greener and more wooded, and the southern side, which descends towards the Isonzo Valley with a drier and barren landscape, is clearly visible. This difference in vegetation and color is visible to the naked eye and is one of the most interesting elements to observe while standing still at the pass for a few minutes.
What to observe physically on site
In addition to the Russian Chapel at hairpin bend 8, it is worth noting the numbered wooden signs that mark each bend: they are an integral part of the visual identity of this road and date back in their current form to a long-established tradition. As you ascend, you pass through different vegetation zones: starting from forests of spruce and larch, you cross an area of wind-twisted dwarf pines, and finally arrive at bare rock and summit scree.
At the pass itself, there are some shelters open during the summer season, where it is possible to stop for a coffee or a simple meal. The closest structure to the pass is the Erjavčeva koča Refuge, a landmark for hikers who use the pass as a base for more challenging climbs to the surrounding peaks.
Practical tips for the visit
The road to the Vršič Pass is generally open from May to November, depending on weather conditions and the presence of snow. In winter, the pass is closed to regular traffic. The best time to visit is between June and September, when conditions are more stable. The road is one-way alternating in some sections, regulated by traffic lights, so some waiting time should be expected.
Those arriving by car from Kranjska Gora will take about 30-40 minutes to reach the pass, stopping at the viewpoints. In summer, especially on weekends, traffic can be heavy during the central hours of the day: it is better to avoid the time between 10 AM and 2 PM. Those who prefer to hike or bike will find the road passable but challenging: the elevation gain from Kranjska Gora is about 800 meters. Bringing layered clothing is essential, as even in mid-summer, the temperature at the pass can drop significantly compared to the valley.
