Malconsiglio Castle - Miglionico | Secret World Trip Planner

The castle, belonging to the Sanseverino family, takes its name from the conspiracy organized inside by the barons of the kingdom, against Ferdinand I of Aragon, king of Naples. The castle has the shape of a parallelogram, flanked by seven towers, the oldest of which are square, two bitorri and some circular towers, placed at the top of the building. It is built on two levels, with a gallery that dates back to a restructuring commissioned by the Revertera family in 1600. Frequently Asked Questions

The castle earned its name 'Malconsiglio' (meaning 'bad counsel') after a failed conspiracy organized by the barons of the kingdom against Ferdinand I of Aragon on October 1, 1481. The rebellion ended tragically with a bloody massacre of the barons in the great hall on the second floor, and the castle has carried this dark name ever since.
The castle features a distinctive parallelogram shape with seven towers of varying styles—the oldest being square towers, two twin towers (bitorri), and some circular towers positioned at the top of the structure. It was built on two levels and underwent significant restructuring in 1600 by the Revertera family, who added a notable gallery.
The Hall of the Star, also known as the Hall of the Spirits, is considered the most beautiful part of Malconsiglio Castle and features specially carved niches built into its walls. These niches were designed to display and store the treasures of the castle's inhabitants, making it a highlight for visitors interested in the castle's artistic heritage.
Malconsiglio Castle belonged to the powerful Sanseverino family, one of the most influential noble families in the Kingdom of Naples. The castle remained significant under their ownership until the tragic events of 1481 that gave it its famous name.
The castle underwent major restructuring in 1600 commissioned by the Revertera family, who added architectural elements including the gallery that visitors can see today. This 17th-century renovation helped preserve and enhance the castle's structure for future generations.
